Ever since ~2019 I’ve been interested in having LED taillights in the MX5 but I also wanted to be able to create images, figures, signs and have them move.

Together with this I layed out a very simple 8x8 programmable LED grid in TinkerCAD as well.
And with some scouring of the web, I found a 3d model for in TinkerCAD, and managed to get in touch with BoazTheOstrich on instagram, as he had already made this before, and even 3d printed entire tail light housings.

Early 2019 I also had the idea to create a central 3rd brake light in between the indicators, with some inspiration taken from certain other cars.
This would work when using a USDM of JDM license plate holder, where I would be able to cut the top part off and fit a straight tube there.
I had made different concepts back then which you can see next to here. Every one had just a little different white covers which I would put over a light.
Early 2024 I actually got somewhere with this project. I had bought a fucked up set of taillights which I could easily take apart for dimensions and Ideas.
As of now (Dec 2024) I have 2 main designs in mind, of which the second one with the full white face gives the most options to actually create images with lights.

I recently (20 dec 2024) discovered some of my old notes and drawings. To the left is my first actual concept, tiny but I got the idea.
